So far, Republicans have been holding back when discussing the causes of the current financial crisis. But I'm finished pulling my punches.

Here's the bottom-line -- Democrats pressured banks to make loans to people who could not afford them. And now we are all paying the price.

You have to read this article from The New York Times....circa 1999!

It is a devastating look at liberal Democrat Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac policies that now threaten to bring down the entire U.S. economy. Here's a taste:

"In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's." (New York Times, 9/30/1999)

As a result of this liberal Democrat incompetence, the world financial markets are now on the verge of collapse! And hard-working Americans all over the country may have a tough time getting a car loan, a mortgage, or a loan to expand small a business.

Make no mistake about it. The primary cause of this mess is liberal Democrat do-goodery.

Democrats are desperately trying to pin this financial meltdown on everyone but themselves!

Last week, in Colorado, they tried to blame Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer.

Yesterday, in a historic display of partisan ineptitude, Nancy Pelosi blamed conservative Republicans in the House Of Representatives. And in the presidential debate, Barack Obama blamed John McCain for the impending financial collapse.

Democrats absurdly claim that free markets, low taxes and deregulation caused this crisis. So let me get this straight. Democrats manipulate markets for liberal goals, those markets collapse, and then those same Democrats blame the markets? Do they think the American people are dopes?

Obama and the Debt

To me, the number one issue in this election is which candidate will ultimately balance the budget and begin paying down the national debt. Last week at the Utah League of Cities conference the nonpartisan Concord Coalition shared some harrowing figures about where the country is going on its current path. At the rate we are spending, by 2030 the entire federal budget will be consumed by interest payments on the debt, Medicare/Medicaid, and Social Security with no money left over for defense, transportation, etc. By 2045 the interest payments alone on the national debt will consume the entire budget.

Perhaps this is why I get concerned when I hear reports that while John McCain has an aim to balance the budget by the end of his first term, deficit reduction is not even a goal of Barack Obama's. "I do not make a promise that we can reduce it by 2013 because I think it is important for us to make some critical investments right now in America's families," Obama said. In otherwords, lets spend now and you young people and your children can sort out the mess later. C'mon, Barack, even Bill Clinton understood the importance of future preference-i.e. sacrificing today so that tomorrow will be better; NOT enjoying today at the expense of tomorrow!

For McCain's part, I hope he offers even more specifics to support his goal of balancing the budget by 2013. It is a national goal worthy of priority, and the accomplishment of it would be very Utah GOP-like. After all, this is the state that always balances its budgets, thanks to Republican leadership that delivers!

Today in Golden, CO Senator Barack Obama stated that the type of leadership that we need in the White House is that similar to the Governor of Colorado or the Mayor of Golden, Colorado.

Isn’t it interesting that a Washington DC Senator claimed that the type of leadership we need is that of a two year governor, or that of a small town mayor?

Wasn’t it the democrats that questioned whether Sarah Palin was prepared to be the Vice President?

Repeatedly Democrats and liberal minded individuals fault the Republican Party for not representing the needs of minorities. They often claim that Republicans are rich white folks looking to guard their own pocketbooks and those of their rich buddies.

What a false and unfounded claim.

Just look at what Senator Orrin Hatch has done with the Elderly Justice Act. What an example of Republicans standing up for the downtrodden.

As someone who cares about minorities and those who are less fortunate I am so glad to be a Utah Republican where I know that our elected officials and our candidates care for all of their constituents and work hard for them.

Recently, the liberal MSM has been apoplectic about the fact that Gov. Sarah Palin hired lobbyists while mayor of Wasilla to help her town receive its share of federal earmarks. The reality is that with few exceptions (such as Sen. McCain) most members of Congress have worked to bring home to their districts some federal money for specific projects. In Utah this has included the new radar tower for the Provo Airport, money for transit before the Olympics, and construction money for the Utah Cultural Celebration Center.

In total, earmarks account for 0.6% of the annual federal budget. Are earmarks evil? It depends who you talk to, but the reality is they are a part of the Washington game as it is currently being played, and a municipal leader would be foolish not to try to get their share. Yes, even West Valley City (along with other major Utah cities) spends money on lobbyists in DC to help bring home these important projects. Should we? As a city councilman it is my opinion we are shortchanging our local cities if we just pass on that opportunity and let all the project money go to San Francisco, Chicago, or elsewhere.

The debate on earmarks reminds me of the debate in the 1990s about term limits. Are term limits a good thing? Maybe or maybe not, but a state would be crazy to term limit their own congressional delegation while seniority is the name of the game. If there are term limits nationwide, that's one thing, but why shortchange your own state in the meantime.? Likewise, a mayor or governor would be crazy to not try to get federal money for genuinely valuable projects. In that vein, Mayor Palin and later Governor Palin was just looking out for her constituency. Yet even then, she was sensitive to government waste and accepted only half of the earmark monies of her predecessor.

In her words, "I was for infrastructure being built in the state," she said, "and it's not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress, their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug in to the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure."

Ultimately, a McCain-Palin administration will work to put an end to the earmark process as we know it today. In the meantime, who is the MSM to fault Sarah Palin for trying to get her share for Wasilla and Alaska?

I just found out that Governor Palin's youngest son, Trig Paxon Van Palin, was given that name as part homage to Van Halen. Oh yeah, we are on the right track. And I bet you'll never forget how to pronounce her name again.
